On January 31, 2023, Exodus Transitional Community joined the Treatment Not Jails Coalition in Albany! According to David Delancy, NYCRTF Coordinator, “For decades, New Yorkers struggling with mental health and substance use disorders have been funneled into jails and prisons being denied the treatment they need to succeed. It costs over half a million dollars annually to detain/incarcerate one person in an NYC jail. For this investment, our communities experience high recidivism rates, trauma, and family dissolution. The Treatment Not Jails Act will expand and improve New York State by creating statutory mental health and substance abuse courts in every county in New York State. Let’s invest in community safety by prioritizing treatment over jails.”
