The Peace Brokers Program at Exodus Transitional Community is a youth violence intervention and community healing initiative in NYC, focused on supporting individuals ages 14–24 who are at high risk of involvement in violence or the justice system. Rooted in restorative justice practices, the program uses credible messenger mentorship, court advocacy, and trauma-informed outreach to interrupt cycles of harm and create lasting pathways to healing and leadership.

Peace Brokers is led by trained credible messengers—individuals with lived experience in the justice system—who serve as mentors and community leaders. They build relationships with youth and young adults, offering support, guidance, and consistent presence in the neighborhoods most impacted by violence.

The program includes a new court advocacy initiative for 14–18-year-olds involved in Family Court, providing a trauma-informed alternative to detention or further legal consequences. As a result, courts are now mandating youth to the program, recognizing it as a viable and transformative solution.

Peace Brokers also facilitates street outreach, violence prevention workshops, youth engagement events, and recreational programs like basketball leagues and life skills classes. In partnership with NYPD’s 25th Precinct, NYCHA developments (Wagner and Johnson Houses), PSA 5, and other local stakeholders, the program fosters community trust and systemic change.

Whether through leadership development, reentry support for youth, or family court alternatives in NYC, Peace Brokers empowers young people to reclaim their potential and become agents of peace in their communities.
